As we entered the 1990’s, many of the old names of porn from the Golden Age of Pornography were retiring or turning to new, lucrative ways to make money, including producing and directing themselves. This left a spot to be filled for new talent. And filled it was! With male pornstars of the 90’s offering stamina, comedy, and controversy, names like Manuel Ferrara, Dave Cummings, and Max Hardcore quickly took their time in the spotlight and dominated the 90’s porn scene.

Manuel Ferrara
Our first in today’s roundup is French pornstar Manuel Ferrara. While studying to become a PE teacher in 1997, his career in the hardcore porn scene started, and he immediately shot to stardom shooting throughout France and the rest of Europe. At the end of the 90’s, he was one of the most popular male pornstars of the time as he moved into the American market. In the early 00’s, he became the protege of porn superstar Rocco Siffredi who recommended him for Stagliano’s Fashionistas in 2002. By 2006, he moved over to directing gonzo-style porn and has been successfully running his website.
Evan Stone
American-born Evan Stone is next on our list; he started his career in adult films in 1997 after working as an exotic dancer throughout the mid-’90’s. However, his portrayal of the monster in the 2001 parody porn Hung Wankenstine shot him to stardom, earning him his first AVN Award for Male Performer. In 2011, he won the AVN Award for Male Performer of the Year for the third time (making him the third actor to ever do so after Manuel Ferrara and Lexington Steele.) In 2002, he announced his plans to run for Congress in Nevada.
Dave Cummings
Dave Cummings unusually started his career in porn; unlike most others who started in their 20’s or 30’s, he became a pornstar at 55 after gaining two degrees (one in economics), serving in the US Army, and gaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After his first film: The Devil in Miss Jones, in 1995, he quickly became a popular male pornstar throughout the 90’s due to his stamina in sex scenes and appeared in hundreds of porn movies throughout the 90’s.
Randy Spears
Originally focused on being a mainstream actor, Randy Spears quickly rose through the ranks of porn popularity for his ability to act in scenes and his comedic talent. He started in 1988, and in the 1990’s, his career took off after he travelled to Australia to film Singles Holiday, Lost in Paradise, Dial a Sailor, Sexual Healer, and Outback Assignment. His best-known pornographic film series is the Sex Trek movies, which parody Star Trek.
Max Hardcore
Max Hardcore is one of the most famous, if not one of the most controversial, pornstars of the decade as both an actor and a director, with his movies pushing boundaries and causing outcry at their extreme nature that has often made him unpopular in the porn industry. His work often depicts anal sex, double penetration, and simulated acts of violence and degradation, for which he spent 46 months in prison after being convicted in 2008 under the Obscenity Laws. Throughout his career, he has won multiple XRCO and AVN awards for his work as both an actor and a director, with his gonzo-style porn being described as “testing the limits of acceptability.” Sadly Max passed away in March of this year.
Zenza Raggi
The Morocco-born Zenza Raggi entered the porn industry in 1991 and performed his first hardcore scene in 1994’s Sex Power – Kilniksex before continuing his career throughout the 90’s. Alongside being a talented actor, he was nominated for AVN Awards for Best Threeway Sex Scene and Male Foreign Performer of the Year in 2009. He also went on to direct his films as well
Tommy Gun
The New Jersey native, Tommy Gun, started his career in 2004 with a hardcore scene in Jacks’s Teen America: Mission 4, quickly earning him an AVN award for Best Newcomer. After that, he quickly racked up multiple awards, including the AVN Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2006 for his role in the Pirates series. Since then, he has had small parts in mainstream TV shows and music videos. He directed his movies and launched a lingerie line.
Lexington Steele
Lexington Steele is last but not least in today’s top best male pornstars in the 90’s. Throughout the 90’s and 00’s, he worked as a porn actor, director, and producer. With his first film being the 1997 World Sex Tour 21: France, he has gone on to star in over 800 adult films and is still working. He owns two adult production companies, Mercenary Motion Pictures and Black Viking Pictures Inc., where he exclusively directs his movies. He is one of the few porn actors that have won the AVN Male Performer of the Year three times.
